Fly Fishing Gear - The Right Tools for the Job

As with any endeavour, having the right gear is instrumental to success, and often times makes the difference between a good day on the water and a great day on the water. If you are just getting into fly fishing, or are expanding your array of target species, it can be tricky to determine exactly what gear will give you that extra edge.

Examples of fly fishing gear that can vary from species to species are rod weights and lengths, flies, reel types, nets, and fish handing equipment. You will likely want to swap some gear out as you move from one target species to another, but gear can often cross over in unexpected ways. For example, that size 10 stonefly you use for big rainbows may not get a single take from your local largemouth bass, but it may be equally as potent on common carp in your area.

To help you gear up for the species you are targeting, I have created a fly fishing gear checklist that walks through the items you will want for some common target species. Use the link below to download the list and head to the water.
